Historical Background

The Dominican Order arrived in Malta shortly after the Order of St John established its new capital in Valletta. The monk Fra’ Dominicus Cassar secured both land and patronage for a new church in 1571 under the advocacy of Our Lady of Porto Salvo (Our Lady of Safe Harbour) and Saint Dominic de Guzman. Construction was directed by Giorgio Cassar, chief engineer of the Knights of St John. The church opened to worship in 1578 along the future Merchants Street axis, serving Valletta’s eastern district overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Repeated earthquakes and lightning strikes in the 17th century forced major reconstruction between 1688 and 1711 under architect Francesco Buonamici and, later, Lorenzo Gafà. This rebuild transformed the church into a Baroque design with a graceful rotunda and radiating altars. Pope Pius VII granted the title of Basilica Minor in 1815 in recognition of its historic and artistic splendour, making it one of the first basilicas in the Maltese Islands.

During World War II the Dominican Friary next door was destroyed by bombing in 1942; the church itself suffered roof damage restored between 1950 and 1954 through public donations. Its paintings and altar marbles were successfully saved, preserving Baroque heritage authentic to the original artists.

Architecture & Layout

The plan of St Dominic’s Basilica follows a classical basilican form with a large central nave, two side aisles each leading to radiating chapels, and a semicircular apse. The façade is fronted by three arches supported on Corinthian pilasters and an imposing pediment bearing the Dominican coat of arms and a Latin inscription dedicating the church to Mary, Protectress of Seafarers.

Its dome – considered one of the most elegant in Valletta – is decorated with a lantern that lights an entire fresco series by Antonio Manucci (1720). Eight marble altars line the interior, each dedicated to different saints of the Dominican Order. Distinctive features include ornate stucco decoration, gold‑leaf finials, and a polychrome marble floor laid after 1780 by Sicilian craftsmen.

Artworks & Interior Decoration

The Basilica of St Dominic houses some of the finest Religious Baroque masterpieces in Malta. Prominent works include:

  • Main Altarpiece – “The Glory of Saint Dominic” by Mattia Preti (c. 1678). A luminous depiction of the saint receiving the Rosary from the Virgin, surrounded by angels and theological virtues, commissioned as Valletta’s Dominican triumph of faith after the plague years.

  • Bronze Tabernacle (1733): Cast in Rome by founder Francesco Spagna using donations from Maltese mariners thankful for safe return voyages.
  • Pipe Organ (1770): Installed by Domenico Prospero; restored 2011 – retains its mechanical tracker action and Baroque woodwork case by Maltese craftsmen.

Restoration & Conservation

Regular maintenance ensured the basilica’s preservation through centuries of change. The 19th‑century façade facing Merchants Street received extensive stone replacement works from 1848 to 1856, executed by Gabriel Caruana & Sons. Further works in 1900–1910 strengthened the dome and added stained‑glass windows imported from Paris.

During World War II, bombing in April 1942 hit the friary cloisters but spared the main nave thanks to firefighters and residents who protected the decorations. Post-war restoration (1949–1954) cleaned Preti’s altarpiece and Manucci’s fresco series. In 2008–2012 Heritage Malta sponsored an EU‑funded programme to digitally scan and repair stucco ornamentation and update lighting for tourism purposes.

Today the basilica is Category I listed (National Inventory ref. 00040). All paintings have been stabilised under controlled climate conditions with regular monitoring by the Dominican friars and heritage conservators.

Present Status & Community Use

The Basilica of St Dominic serves as the head church of the Dominican Order in Malta and a prominent centre of Marian and Rosary devotion. Daily Masses and evening Rosary services are held with active lay fraternities participating. In 2004 a Rosary museum was added within the cloister, displaying antique processional objects and silver ex‑votos.

The annual *Festa ta’ San Domeniku u Madonna tal‑Portu Salvu* takes place in mid‑August, transforming Valletta’s streets with traditional blue‑and‑white decorations and music by local bands. The feast reflects centuries of faith in the Virgin as Star of the Sea, protector of sailors, linking the basilica’s maritime title to the nearby harbour.

The friars also host lectures, art concerts, and heritage tours in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency, welcoming hundreds of visitors yearly who come to admire its Baroque splendour and reflective silence amid the busy city.
