Historical Background

The Church of St Catherine of Italy, locally Santa Katerina ta’ l‑Italja, was built in 1576 for the Langue of Italy of the Order of St John. It replaced a smaller chapel for Italian knights stationed at the adjacent Auberge d’Italia, which today houses MUŻA, Malta’s national art museum. Designed by Girolamo Cassar and completed by 1590, it quickly became one of Valletta’s most elegant early churches.

Serving as the chaplaincy for Italian knights and residents, it was dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, the erudite martyr who symbolised wisdom and steadfast faith—qualities deeply admired by the Order’s Italian members.

Architecture & Design

The structure is circular in plan with an octagonal dome, reflecting Cassar’s Palladian influences and affinity for geometrical harmony. Externally, its façade combines Doric pilasters with a restrained entablature and an elliptical pediment bearing the coat of arms of the Italian Langue. The interior consists of a central domed chamber illuminated by a high drum, surrounded by shallow recesses creating a sense of perfect proportion. From 1630 onwards, Baroque embellishments—including gilded cornices and marble altar frames—were gradually introduced, culminating in Mattia Preti’s 17th‑century decorative program.

Works of Art

  • Main Altarpiece – “The Martyrdom of St Catherine” by Mattia Preti (c. 1659): A dramatic Baroque composition portraying the saint’s spiritual ecstasy amid her executioners. It is regarded as one of Preti’s most mature works in Malta.
  • Ceiling and Dome Frescoes: Preti also painted the fresco cycle “The Glory of St Catherine” on the domed ceiling, eliciting movement and light typical of the Baroque vision of heaven.
  • Side Altars & Paintings: Two side chapels contain scenes of the Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist, and the Adoration of the Magi (possibly from Preti’s circle).
  • Sculptural Details: Marble pilasters, ornate cornices, and carved angels executed by local craftsmen under the supervision of Preti.

Restoration & Conservation

Over the centuries, the church underwent several restorations. In the early 1880s the dome was strengthened and re‑plastered. A comprehensive program by the St John’s Co‑Cathedral Foundation and the Ministry for Heritage was initiated in 2001 to stabilize the roof and clean Preti’s paintings, which had darkened with soot. By 2015, the interior was fully restored, revealing the original 17th‑century palette and improving lighting for visitors.

Today, the church is maintained by the Order of St John (Italian Association) and celebrates mass occasionally for the Italian community of Malta. It is listed as a Grade 1 national monument and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Valletta.
