The Sannat Parish Church in Gozo, formally known as Il-Knisja Parrokkjali ta' Santa Margerita, stands as one of the oldest and most historically significant parish churches on the island. Dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch, this remarkable Baroque church has served the faithful of Sannat for centuries and remains a cornerstone of village life and tradition.
Origins of Sannat Parish
Sannat was established as a separate parish on 28 April 1688 by Bishop Davide Cocco-Palmieri, making it among the earliest parishes created in Gozo’s ecclesiastical history. Before this establishment, local devotion centred on a smaller chapel dedicated to St Margaret, which served the scattered rural community.
Construction Timeline (1718–1868)
With parish status secured, the current parish church was begun in 1718 on the site of the earlier chapel. Built in the traditional form of a Latin cross, the structure was completed and first consecrated on 19 October 1755, reflecting the vision of parishioners and clergy to create a larger and more dignified space for worship.
Throughout the 19th century, the church underwent significant structural expansions to accommodate a growing congregation. After these enhancements, it was re-consecrated on 22 November 1868, reaffirming its spiritual role in the community.
Archipresbyteral Status and Later Developments
On 27 December 1893, the parish church was elevated to the status of an Archipresbyteral church, indicating its prominence within the Diocese of Gozo. Later, when Munxar separated to become an independent parish in 1957, Sannat remained a cathedral of devotion for the surrounding communities.
Architecture & Structure
Constructed mainly from warm local limestone, the Sannat Parish Church exhibits classic Baroque architectural elements. The building’s façade is imposing and elegantly balanced, showcasing traditional proportions typical of rural Maltese parish churches. Twin bell towers and a prominent central dome were added during the early 20th century, enriching the church’s silhouette and visual presence in the village skyline.
Interior & Artistic Highlights
Visitors entering the church are immediately struck by its artistic treasures. Central among these is the titular painting of St Margaret of Antioch, attributed to famed Gozitan artist Stefano Erardi. This altarpiece reflects both devotional reverence and the high artistic standards of Maltese Baroque art.
In addition to Erardi’s masterpiece, the interior houses additional notable works, including representations of the Stations of the Cross and other devotional depictions that guide parishioners through the rich cycles of the liturgical year.
