Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Żebbuġ Parish Church, Gozo – Assumption of Mary

Early Christian and Medieval Background

The village of Żebbuġ is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Gozo, with Christian worship in the area predating the formal establishment of the parish. Prior to becoming an independent parish, the community formed part of the medieval parish of the Assumption in Victoria (Rabat), the mother church of Gozo.

A small chapel dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary served the spiritual needs of the local population. As Żebbuġ grew in population and importance, the distance from Rabat and the increasing demands of pastoral care led to calls for parish autonomy.

Establishment of the Parish

Żebbuġ was officially erected as a separate parish on 28 April 1688 by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri. This made it one of the earliest parishes established outside Rabat and marked a significant moment in the ecclesiastical development of Gozo.

The Assumption of Mary was retained as the parish dedication, reflecting a strong Marian devotion that remains central to village identity and religious life.

Construction of the Present Church (1690–1726)

Construction of the present parish church began in 1690, shortly after parish status was granted. The project extended over several decades, largely due to financial limitations and reliance on local craftsmanship.

Built in the Baroque style typical of late 17th- and early 18th-century Maltese ecclesiastical architecture, the church was designed as a monumental expression of faith, intended to rival larger churches on the main island despite Gozo’s smaller population.

The church was solemnly consecrated on 30 September 1726, making it one of the earliest consecrated parish churches on Gozo, second only to the Cathedral in Victoria.

Architecture and Interior Decoration

Externally, the church is characterized by its imposing Baroque façade and twin bell towers, which dominate the Żebbuġ skyline and serve as a visual landmark across western Gozo.

Internally, the church is especially renowned for its extensive use of locally sourced travertine, commonly referred to as Gozo “onyx”. This material was used extensively during later decorative phases for altars, wall panelling, pilasters, and the sanctuary, giving the interior a distinctive warm and luminous appearance.

The titular painting of the Assumption of Mary, depicting the Holy Trinity crowning the Virgin, dates to the early 18th century and occupies the high altar. Numerous side altars and devotional artworks reflect the spiritual life and patronage of the parish over generations.

Enlargement and Modern Interventions

Between 1938 and 1942, the church underwent significant enlargement works to accommodate a growing population. These interventions expanded the internal space while respecting the original Baroque character.

Throughout the late 20th century, systematic restoration and embellishment projects focused on structural conservation and the enhancement of the onyx interior. These works transformed the church into one of the most visually striking parish churches on Gozo.
