A marble memorial on the Gżira Parish Church recording the names of people from Gżira who were killed during the Second World War. The inscription commemorates the war dead of the locality between 1939 and 1945.
Gżira's War Memorial
Unlike a freestanding civic war monument, the Gżira memorial is mounted directly on the parish church. The marble plaque is set into the church façade and records the names of those remembered by the Gżira community as having been killed in the war.
The inscription begins with the words “Il-Gżira lil uliedha maqtula bil-gwerra ta' 1939–1945”, meaning approximately “Gżira to her children killed by the war, 1939–1945”.

The Memorial and the Parish Church
The plaque is attached to the Gżira Parish Church, the parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Its position on the church gives the memorial a different character from freestanding civic monuments such as the Sliema War Memorial: the names are incorporated into the religious and community setting in which generations of Gżira residents would have encountered them.
