The Maltese Islands contain hundreds of memorials dedicated to those who served and sacrificed during times of war. These include national monuments, village memorials, church plaques, military monuments, memorial windows, rolls of honour, cemetery monuments, school memorials and commemorative tablets found throughout Malta and Gozo.
Many of these memorials are well known, while others remain largely undocumented or are hidden within churches, schools, military buildings and public institutions. Together they form an important part of Malta's military, cultural and social history.
The aim of this project is to create the first comprehensive catalogue of every known war memorial and commemorative plaque in the Maltese Islands. Each memorial will eventually be documented, photographed, mapped and researched to preserve its history for future generations.
About This Project
This catalogue is an ongoing research project by Emalta.
Every memorial included within this catalogue is researched using published historical sources, archival material and, whenever possible, personal site visits and original photography.
