History & Design of the Monument

The Mosta War Memorial stands as a uniquely evocative structure designed to honor the residents of Mosta who lost their lives in defense of their town and country. Sculpted in a style reminiscent of tumbled stone masonry and collapsed fortification walls, the base features roughly fourteen stone slabs clustered together to evoke the physical wreckage of war.

Sculptor: Δ anni Bonnici (1932–2019)

Year of Creation: 1992 (Inscribed "Δ . BONNICI 1992" on the main bronze figure)

Local Name: Il-Monument tal-KuraΔ‘Δ‘uΕΌi Mostin (Monument to the Courageous Mostin)

Unlike conventional single-era obelisks, this monument brings together Mosta's casualties across three distinct historical epochs into one unified roll of honour:

  • The Maltese Uprising against the French (1798–1800)
  • World War I (1914–1918)
  • World War II (1940–1945)

1. The French Blockade Uprising (1798–1800)

During the Maltese insurrection against Napoleon's occupying garrison, French troops trapped inside Valletta made periodic armed incursions into the surrounding countryside to plunder food and livestock. On January 17, 1799, a skirmish erupted in Mosta as local militiamen and residents fought to protect their homes, resulting in several civilian deaths.

2. World War I (1914–1918)

During the First World War, Malta served as the critical "Nurse of the Mediterranean," while hundreds of Maltese servicemen answered the call to serve at sea and on foreign fronts. The stone tablet below records the servicemen from Mosta who gave their lives between 1914 and 1918.

3. World War II (1940–1945)

The following stone tablets form the roll of honour commemorating the civilian and service casualties from Mosta who lost their lives between 1940 and 1945.
