Figure 1: An overall front view of the Senglea War Memorial depicting figures amidst fallen masonry, dedicated on September 5, 1991, with the front inscription: "B'Tifkira u B'Għieh lis-Sengleani li tilfu ħajjithom matul it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija 1939-1945".
Introduction & Historical Context
During the Second World War, the maritime city of Senglea (L-Isla), situated directly across the Grand Harbour opposite the Royal Navy Dockyard, suffered catastrophic devastation. Aerial bombardment destroyed large swathes of the historic city, including the Basilica of Our Lady of Victories, taking a heavy toll on the local civilian population and service personnel.
Erected in September 1991, the public war memorial commemorates the Sengleani who perished during the conflict between 1939 and 1945. The monument's stone base bears carved panels recording the names of the fallen. Below are full transcriptions of these engraved casualty lists, categorized by their position on the monument pedestal.
