Overview
Vendôme Tower (also known as the Vendôme Tour-Réduit) is a distinctive coastal fortification in Marsaxlokk, Malta. Constructed in 1715 by the Order of Saint John, it was designed to protect the strategically important Marsaxlokk Bay.
Unlike standard watchtowers or redoubts, Vendôme Tower belongs to the rarer category of tour-réduit— a hybrid defensive structure combining a tower with a reduced fortification.

Historical background
In the early 18th century, the Order of Saint John undertook a major programme to reinforce Malta’s vulnerable coastlines. Marsaxlokk Bay, with its natural harbour and proximity to major sea routes, was a key concern.
Vendôme Tower was erected in 1715 to strengthen local defences, working in coordination with nearby batteries, entrenchments, and other coastal works.
Architecture: what is a tour-réduit?
A tour-réduit combines the vertical presence of a tower with the defensive function of a small redoubt. This allowed a garrison to observe wide stretches of coastline while also providing a fortified refuge if overrun.
Key architectural characteristics
- Central tower mass used for observation and command
- Reduced defensive footprint compared to larger forts
- Limestone construction typical of Knights-era works
- Integration with surrounding coastal defences
