🏰 Vincenti Tower (Torri Vinċenti), Mqabba

📍 Location

Found on the outskirts of Mqabba, in southern Malta.

Originally built in the countryside, it was part of a rural estate; today it is within the expanded village area.

🏗️ Construction

Date Built:1726

Builder: Fra Orfeo de Vincenzo, a Prior of the Order of St John.

Purpose: Constructed as part of a countryside residence for leisure and prestige, rather than as a military structure.

Associated Buildings:

A palace/farmhouse known as Ta’ Torri Spero.

A garden separating the farmhouse from the tower.

Style:

The tower was originally four stories high, with a balcony on its second floor, and it had a scarped base which made it somewhat similar to coastal watchtowers such as the De Redin towers. The tower had a coat of arms and an inscription commemorating its construction, but these are now lost.

Baroque influences typical of 18th-century Maltese aristocratic country houses.

Square plan, with multiple storeys, built from local limestone.

Large, symmetrical windows for light and ventilation.

More of a residential tower-palace than a fortified stronghold, reflecting a time of relative security in Malta.

📜 History

18th Century: Served as the noble country residence of Fra Orfeo de Vincenzo. Unlike earlier medieval and coastal towers, Vincenti Tower was not built for military defense but as a prestigious residence and retreat.

19th Century: Continued in use as a rural noble home.

20th Century: During World War II, the surrounding Mqabba area was heavily bombed due to its proximity to airfields. The tower and its estate were affected, but the building remained standing.

Present Day:

The tower still exists and is a landmark of Mqabba’s heritage.

It is recognized as a scheduled building under cultural heritage protection.

Privately owned, with limited public access, but visible externally.
