Briconet Redoubt (Marsaskala)

Also known as the Marsaskala Redoubt and the Vendôme Entrenchment, this coastal fortification was erected by the Order of Saint John during the 1715/16 coastal building programme and is among the best-preserved redoubts on the islands.

Built: 1715/16 Type: Coastal redoubt Plan: Pentagonal platform + blockhouse NICPMI: 1424 Protection: Grade 1

What makes Briconet Redoubt distinctive?

Briconet Redoubt follows the characteristic Maltese coastal redoubt formula: a pentagonal gun platform with short flanks and a rectangular blockhouse closing the gorge (rear). What sets it apart is the defensive emphasis on the landward side: the gorge and flanks are enclosed by high boundary walls pierced with musketry loopholes—a response to the surrounding higher ground behind it.

In its 18th-century role, the redoubt helped protect Marsaskala Bay as part of a wider defensive network that included other fortifications in the area.
