Historical Background

Il‑Kappella ta’ Santa Marija ta’ Ċwerra is one of Siġġiewi’s most cherished National Inventory chapels. Built at the beginning of the 18th century, it stands almost adjacent to the Parish Church of St Nicholas and the smaller Chapel of St John the Baptist. It was commissioned by a local guild devoted to the Assumption of Our Lady and served as a private oratory for devotional gatherings and Marian feasts.

The name “Ċwerra” derives from an old district nickname, possibly linked to the Maltese word for a ridge or terrace of land. The chapel is referenced in parish records from 1725 as a dependency of the main parish church, used for evening rosary and processions in August. Since then, it has been an integral part of Siġġiewi’s spiritual landscape.

Architecture & Features

The chapel has a rectangular plan with a low oval dome concealed behind a sloping Baroque façade framed by pilasters and an ornamental cornice. Its single doorway is surmounted by the coat of arms of a local benefactor family. An oval oculus provides light to the nave, while a small bellcot crowns the gable. Inside, stone walls are white‑washed and adorned with a gilded wooden altar and balustrade.

A single altar dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady is flanked by painted pilasters and a floral motive cornice, typical of the village Baroque period. The table altar retains its original masonry structure, and the floor is laid with early 19th‑century encaustic tiles. Though small, the chapel displays remarkable craftsmanship and proportion harmonious with the monumental Parish Church standing beside it.

Restoration & Conservation

A comprehensive restoration was carried out by the Siġġiewi Parish Foundation between 2016 and 2018. Works included stone cleaning, grouting of cracked masonry, lime‑based repainting of the interior, and micro‑repairs to the altarpiece frame and statue polychromy. A new subtle LED lighting system was installed for evening services. This project won commendation from the Restoration Directorate of Malta for sensitive preservation within a village core context.

Present Use & Parish Context

It hosts local rosary gatherings, Sunday devotions in summer, and serves as a stopping point during the Assumption procession. Its picturesque position along Pjazza San Nikola makes it a favourite subject for artists and photographers highlighting Siġġiewi’s Baroque streetscape.

Map & Location

The chapel stands in the heart of Pjazza San Nikola, flanked by the Parish Church of St Nicholas to the north and the Chapel of St John the Baptist to the south. It contributes to a unique ensemble of three places of worship within the same square – a distinctive feature of Siġġiewi’s religious heritage.
