Historical Background
The Parish Church of Our Lady of Help and St Gregory the Great stands at the centre of Kerċem’s history. An earlier chapel was listed in the 1436 ecclesiastical roll of Gozo, making it among the island’s oldest devotional sites. Following years of expansion of the village, a larger church was proposed in 1845 under Archpriest Anton Spiteri to serve the increasing population.
The foundation stone was laid in 1851 and construction was entrusted to local architect Salvatore Bondin. The building was completed and blessed in 1856 by Bishop Michael Frendo, with its façade and belfries finalised in 1883. The parish was separated from St George’s of Victoria and canonically erected in 1885.
Architecture & Layout
The church presents a Latin‑cross plan with a spacious nave, side aisles, and a central dome illuminating the chancel. Its façade is distinguished by a three‑tier composition of Corinthian pilasters, a triangular pediment, and twin belfries with refined balustrades. Carved limestone detailing and moulded cornices are typical of 19th‑century Gozo Baroque.
Inside, the use of local stone, marble altars and stucco painted in pastel tones reflect Gozitan craftsmanship. The main altar is set beneath a Baroque baldachin decorated with gilded scrolls and angelic reliefs. A parish clock was installed on the left belfry in 1910 to commemorate the church’s jubilee.
Artworks & Decoration
- Main Altarpiece – “Our Lady of Help” (1852): by Giuseppe Hyzler; depicts the Virgin Mary interceding for the faithful with St Gregory and sailors around her throne.

- Side Altars: Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St Joseph; paintings attributed to Chev. Gianni Vella (1930s).
- Statue of Our Lady of Help: wooden statue (1849) carved by Salvatore Dimech – carried annually during the parish feast in August.
- Organ & Pulpit: Pipe organ built 1914 by local craftsmen; Baroque marble pulpit added 1902.
Restoration & Conservation
Major conservation projects have taken place through the 20th and 21st centuries. After WWII minor damage was repaired in 1948. In 1995–2000, a structural survey by Heritage Gozo assessed the dome and façade, leading to stone replacement and protective resin treatment. Further renovations in 2007–2010 included lighting rehabilitation and fresco conservation, co‑funded by the Cultural Heritage Fund Malta. Today the church is classified Grade 1 by the National Inventory.
Present Use & Community Life
Ta’ Kerċem Church remains the focal point for the village’s religious and social life. Regular Masses, processions and catechism classes take place throughout the year. The most important event is the feast of Madonna tas‑Sokkors u San Girgor il‑Kbir celebrated on the third Sunday of August with music, illuminations, and a traditional fun‑run between Kerċem and Victoria. The church is open daily for visitors and functions as an active parish within the Diocese of Gozo.
