Early Life and Founding of the Order
Blessed Gerard was born around 1040 in Scala, a village near Amalfi in southern Italy. Little is known about his early life, but he is believed to have been a lay brother in the Benedictine Order. In 1080, he was appointed as the rector of a hospice in Jerusalem, located in the Muristan area. This hospice provided care for sick and injured pilgrims, regardless of their faith or nationality. Following the success of the First Crusade in 1099, Gerard's hospice became more organized, and he is credited with founding the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which later evolved into the Knights Hospitaller. )
Role as Grand Master
Blessed Gerard served as the first Grand Master of the Order, leading the organization during its formative years. Under his leadership, the Order adopted a monastic rule and took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Order's primary mission was to provide medical care to pilgrims in the Holy Land. In 1113, Pope Paschal II issued the papal bull *Pie postulatio voluntatis*, which officially recognized the Order as a lay religious order. This recognition solidified the Order's status and allowed it to expand its activities.
Legacy
Blessed Gerard died on September 3, 1120, in Jerusalem. He is venerated as a blessed by the Catholic Church, and his feast day is celebrated on October 13. His legacy lives on through the continued humanitarian work of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which operates in over 120 countries, providing medical, social, and humanitarian aid.
