San Lawrenz World War II Memorial
This memorial at San Lawrenz in Gozo commemorates four local civilian victims of the Second World War. The stone memorial records the names and ages of those who died in connection with the wartime attack on San Lawrenz in August 1942.

The Four Civilian Victims
The four names preserved on the memorial were Nazzarena Attard, Carmela Farrugia, Giuseppa Farrugia and Maria Farrugia. Historical accounts of the incident describe Nazzarena Attard as 28 years old, Carmela Farrugia as 35, Maria Farrugia as 35, and their mother Josephine (Giuseppa) Farrugia as 66.
The four women were killed during the wartime events at San Lawrenz in August 1942. Nazzarena Attard was pregnant at the time. The incident is remembered locally as one of the most significant wartime tragedies in the history of San Lawrenz.
Historical Context
During the Second World War, Gozo was not immune from aerial attacks and wartime danger. On the night of 5–6 August 1942, incendiary bombs were dropped on San Lawrenz. The four women commemorated by this memorial lost their lives during this period of the war.
