This memorial in Sannat, Gozo commemorates the victims of the bombing of Sannat on 10 October 1942. The commemorative plaque records the names of eighteen victims and marks the fiftieth anniversary of the bombing, from 1942 to 1992.

Historical Context & Significance

The memorial is situated on the parish church in Sannat. Its principal marble plaque is headed “Il-Parroċċa tfakkar għeluq il-50 sena tal-vittmi tal-bombi li waqgħu f’Sannat”, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the victims of the bombs that fell on Sannat.

The date recorded on the plaque is 10 October 1942. A smaller plaque above the list preserves a fragment of the bomb that fell in Sannat on that date. The larger plaque was commemorated in 1992, fifty years after the event.

The Memorial and Bomb Fragment

The plaque is mounted on the limestone façade of the parish church. Above it is a separate small marble tablet identifying a fragment from a bomb that fell in Sannat on 10 October 1942. The memorial therefore preserves both the names of the victims and a physical fragment associated with the bombing.
