A Burial Site from the Last Major Plague in Malta

The Xagħra Plague Cemetery in Gozo is one of the most important historical burial sites linked to the 1813–1814 plague outbreak in Malta, the last major epidemic of bubonic plague in the Maltese Islands.

The patients were treated at the nearby Plague Hospital

Located outside the village near a temporary plague hospital, the cemetery was established to safely bury victims away from populated areas, following strict public health measures enforced during the epidemic.

The 1814 Plague in Xagħra

The village of Xagħra in Gozo suffered significant losses during the 1813–1814 plague outbreak in the Maltese Islands, with 104 recorded deaths. For a small rural community, this represented a devastating demographic shock, affecting entire families and disrupting village life.

The outbreak in Xagħra appears to have intensified in the spring of 1814, particularly between March and May, when the majority of recorded deaths occurred. The clustering of surnames such as Rapa, Refalo, Camilleri, and Bonello suggests that the disease spread rapidly within households and extended family networks, a common pattern in tightly knit rural communities.

Although Gozo was initially protected by its relative isolation and strict quarantine controls imposed between Malta and Gozo, the disease eventually reached the island through controlled movement of people, goods, or possibly contaminated materials. Once introduced, the limited medical infrastructure and close living conditions allowed the infection to spread quickly.

The victims were buried in a dedicated plague cemetery located outside the village, near a temporary plague hospital. This reflects a major shift in burial practices during epidemics, as authorities moved away from traditional interments داخل churches toward extramural burial grounds to reduce the risk of contagion.

The establishment of this cemetery formed part of a broader public health response that included isolation of the sick, restricted movement, and the separation of infected individuals from the general population. These measures, although based on limited scientific understanding at the time, were crucial in containing the spread of the disease.

Today, the Xagħra plague cemetery stands as an important historical site, preserving the memory of those who died during the epidemic and providing valuable insight into early 19th-century responses to infectious disease in rural Malta.
