Rabat – Churches and Chapels
Introduction
Rabat, Malta, located just outside the ancient fortified city of Mdina, is one of the island’s most historically significant towns, with origins that date back to the Roman city of Melite. Over the centuries, Rabat developed as a centre of early Christian life, evidenced by its extensive catacombs, underground burial complexes, and numerous chapels and churches. The town’s name, derived from the Arabic word for “suburb,” reflects its historical role as the settlement surrounding Mdina following the Arab period in Malta. Today, Rabat is renowned for its rich concentration of religious and archaeological heritage, including sites linked to early Christianity, medieval devotion, and later ecclesiastical development. Its landscape, characterised by narrow streets, rural outskirts, and historic buildings, provides an important context for understanding Malta’s continuous religious traditions and the role of small chapels such as Ta’ Casha within the wider cultural and spiritual fabric of the island.
Location
Rabat
Rabat, Malta is distinguished by one of the highest concentrations of churches and chapels on the island, reflecting its long-standing role as a centre of religious life from antiquity to the present day. From early Christian underground sites and medieval places of worship to later Baroque churches and rural chapels scattered across its outskirts, Rabat presents a continuous evolution of ecclesiastical architecture and devotion. Many of these chapels were established to serve agricultural communities, providing accessible places of prayer beyond the main parish churches, while others formed part of monastic complexes or private estates.
